Saleh Gomaa claims trial offer from Manchester United
The 19-year-old deep lying midfielder is rated as one of the hottest prospects in African football after winning the MVP at the African Under-20 championship last month, as the Young Pharaohs won the tournament in Algeria. Overall Gomaa scored twice and assisted once in the four games he played in the youth tournament, both from the spot, including the penalty that saw Egypt draw 1-1 in the final with Ghana. He then scored from the spot again in the following shoot-out as Egypt won the trophy after beating the Black Satellites 5-4 on penalties. Gomaa’s leadership, composure and maturity displayed at the tournament caught the attention of scouts from top European clubs including Manchester United, according to the player.
“I have been followed by a number of scouts, including two from Granada and Manchester United. The Manchester United scout inquired about the possibility of having a trial with the club and he also asked me about ENPPI’s readiness for a potential transfer.”
According to talkSPORT, Liverpool have also entered the ‘chase’ for Saleh Gomaa.
ENPPI chairman Mohamed Badr would not stand in the way of a move abroad for Gomaa – who made his debut for the club in 2010, aged just 17 – although, there has been no talks with another party so far.
“We welcome the notion of letting youngsters move abroad. We received some inquiries regarding Saleh and Ahmed Refaat (who also impressed in Algeria) through intermediate companies, but we only deal with official bids from other clubs. Up until now, there has been nothing of an official bid for Saleh or Refaat.”
Although, the midfield starlet has been on European clubs’ radar long before the tournament kicked-off in Algeria, as Gomaa previously claimed to have offers from the top sides in Serie A before the close of the winter transfer market.
“My club received offers from Italian agents saying four Italian clubs – AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus and Fiorentina – have shown interest in signing me,” Gomaa told an Egyptian sports TV programme in January.
“The Italian agents contacted my club but ENPPI haven’t decided my final price yet,” added the Pharaoh just after participating in two friendlies with the senior team in which Egypt lost 3-0 to Ghana and 4-2 to Ivory Coast.
“I’m interested in Fiorentina because Ahmed Hegazy plays there. I want to start my European experience because the future of the Egyptian league is still uncertain,” he concluded.
