Newcastle consider hijacking Salah deal from Liverpool
Newcastle are considering to enter the chase for Basel’s Egyptian star Mohamed Salah, according to Sky Sports.
At the beginning of the transfer window, Mohamed Salah’s transfer to Liverpool seemed to be almost done, when his former team-mate Mohamed Zika claimed in an interview he was 99% sure that Salah will be joining Liverpool this January.
Negotiations reportedly stalled for a while as Liverpool were unwilling to match Basel’s £18million asking price. Talks are still ongoing with Liverpool, however, and Brendan Rodgers is reportedly readying a £8million bid for Salah this week.
Newcastle are now considering to enter the chase for Basel’s 21-year-old Egyptian star, according to Sky Sports. The Magpies are currently standing 8th in the EPL and six points away from a Europa League qualifying spot.
Salah has already had his share of tormenting EPL defenses since Basel’s Europa League campaign last season, when he scored a goal against Spurs and Chelsea in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively. The Egypt international put in two MOTM performances against Chelsea in the Champions League this season, as he scored in each group stage fixture to help down Mourinho’s side.
Several clubs have entered the race for Mohamed Salah ever since with interest mainly coming from England, Germany and Spain.
The Egyptian international has been linked with Diego Simione’s La Liga contenders Atlético Madrid, Russian League leaders Zenti St. Petersburg as well as Turkish giants Galatasaray.
The winger has greatly improved his goal scoring abilities, as he scored as many goals for Basel this season as he scored in the entirety of last season.
21-year-old Salah has also scored 17 goals and assisted 10 times for the Pharaohs in 27 games.
The favourites in the race for his signature are still Liverpool, and KingFut.com understands the player is keen on seeking a move to Merseyside.
Former Spurs player and Egyptian international Mido expressed his opinion on the matter saying: “The risk of Salah moving to Liverpool in January is almost negligible, in my opinion.”
Former Egyptian national team coach Bob Bradley also expects Salah to complete a move to the Premier League very soon.
It should be noted Newcastle refused to pay €500,000 to loan Salah from Arab Contractors in 2011, according to Al Ahram. A fee which is now a minor fraction of his current market value, which Transfermarkt estimates at €8.5 million.
