Mourinho: Salah plays the same way as our attacking players
During his regular press conference, Chelsea Manager Jose Mourinho confirms that the club are close to signing Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah subject to a medical, while also stating that the player told him he wants to join Chelsea.
After announcing the club has reached an agreement with FC Basel over the transfer of Mohamed Salah on Thursday, here’s what Mourinho had to say:
“It was a surprise for us that Juan [Mata] was leaving, we were not prepared to make a bid or try to bring someone to replace Juan in the squad – so everything happened very very fast. We tried to work on that and to see which options could be good for us, so when we start [negotiating] with Salah, we start from zero because we had no contacts.
“The first step was to make an agreement with the club and so we reached an agreement with Basel. We have an agreement with the club, everything is done and signed subject to a medical.
“We have to travel and meet him to have a medical in Switzerland,” Mourinho stated
Regarding today’s comments made by Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, Mourinho said: “Maybe he is right, I don’t know what Liverpool did before us. We contacted Basel before we contacted the player and we asked if the player is there to be negotiated and they said yes so we reached an agreement.”
When asked what he liked about Mohamed Salah, the Portuguese said:
“I like the fact that he can play the same way our attacking players do. He can play right, left or as a number 10. He’s fast, creative and enthusiastic. We analyzed him, he looks like a humble personality on the pitch willing to work and adapt.
“We believe when he comes he will go through the same process that Willian has, take 2-3 months to adapt but we think with him Schürrle, Oscar and Hazard we will be fine.
“We have Bertrand Traore, young Hazard, Victor Moses, 2-3 players out on loan and we think we can bring 1 on of them next season to make us complete.
Regarding Salah not shaking hands with Maccabi Tel Aviv players earlier this season, Mourinho said:
“We spoke with the player and his people, the situation was put in front of him and at 20 years old was not easy to resolve. He tried to find some balance which wasn’t good for us obviously. We are a big club with a respectable owner but now I think there are no issues.”
It is worth noting that Mourinho suggested that he will help Salah grow.
“We are confident but as I was saying, we have an agreement with Basel and an agreement with the club only goes forward.
“I can say Salah told me personally that he wants to come, but now there is a medical that he has to pass, probably in Zurich or Lucerne and hopefully he comes but the situation is still open and not closed,” Mourinho concluded
