Egypt Cup Roundup: Al Ahly beats El Minya in a thriller as Smouha progress
Al Ahly 4-3 El Minya
Relegation with the lowest tally of points in both groups of the Egyptian Premier League, along with severe financial problems, didn’t stop El Minya from putting on a great show against Egypt’s most successful club.
El-Sayed Hamdy put Al Ahly through in the 26th minute before El Minya’s striker, Mahmoud Atef, equalised for the southern club.
The second half started with complete dominance from the Red Devils. On the 57th minute, Amr Gamal managed to score Al Ahly’s second goal after finding himself one-on-one with El Minya’s keeper. Five minutes later, Karim Bambo pounced on Ahmed Shedid’s cross to head in Al Ahly’s third goal.
Al Ahly’s players got complacent for the remainder of the half, however, Mahmoud Qaoud of El Minya managed to score back-to-back goals in the 82nd and 90th minute to draw both teams level. However, Amr Gamal managed to score in the final minute of added time to save Al Ahly’s blushes.
Ismaily 3-0 Dakhleya
Ismaily put on a dominant performance to progress to the quarters of the Egypt Cup. In the 28th minute, Ismaily’s talisman and captain Hosni Abd-Rabo scored the first goal after his very weak shot managed to weirdly get past Dakhleya’s keeper. Two minutes later, Abd Rabo managed to double his tally after converting a penalty.
In the second half, Mohamed ‘Zika’ scored Ismaily’s third and final goal after tapping in Abd Rabo’s saved freekick.
Ittihad El-Shorta 2-0 Entag El-Harby
Ittihad El-Shorta were in control of the whole 90 minutes, as the gulf in class between the two sides was evident throughout the game. Mostafa Raafat opened the scoring in the 47th minute after calmly scoring past Entag’s goalkeeper. Minutes later, Ittihad El-Shorta’s player of the season, Khaled Kamar, doubled his side’s tally after scoring from Said Mourad’s cross.
Smouha 2-1 El-Gaish
Smouha managed to come from behind to turn around the tie and progress to the quarter finals of the Egypt Cup. Ahmed Shamama opened the scoring for El-Gaish in the 10th minute, after finding himself one-on-one against Smouha’s goalkeeper. Smouha’s star player and captain, Ahmed Hamoudi, decided to change the events by himself. In the 35th minute he scored a beautifully executed free-kick, before scoring the winner 15 minutes from full time to send his team through to the next round.
