VIDEO: Zamalek overcome Arab Contractors to go top
Zamalek defeated Arab Contractors 1-0 at the Arab Contractors Stadium on Wednesday night to go top of the table.
The only goal of the game came courtesy of in-form Ayman Hefny, who curled the ball past Mahmoud Abou El-Sououd in the first half.
Arab Contractors XI: Mahmoud Abo El-Sououd; Ahmed Aly, Sherif Alaa, Mohamed Khalaf, Ahmed Moudy; Mohamed Mohsen (Taher Mohamed), Hossam Abdel-Aal, Omar Gamal, Mohamed Abou-Sheishe’a; Mohamed Salem, Ernst Papa Arko.
Zamalek XI: Ahmed El-Shennawy; Hamada Tolba, Ali Gabr, Ahmed Dweidar, Islam Gamal; Ahmed Tawfik, Ibrahim Salah, Ahmed Eid, Ayman Hefny (Mohamed Shaaban); Ahmed Ali ( Mostafa Fathy), Khaled Kamar ( Moruf Youssef).
The game started with Zamalek dominating across the midfield, leading to many attempts from the White Knights into the Contractors box, but nothing materialised into a goal.
In the sixth minute Zamalek won a free-kick at the edge of the Contractors box, Khaled Kamar stepped up and unleashed a stinging strike that was met by a beautiful save from Abol El-Sououd.
Zamalek pressed hard for a goal and their efforts were finally rewarded in the 24th minute when the in-form Ahmed Eid crossed a ball from the left side that fell to Ayman Hefny whose curler found the top corner, giving Mohamed Salah’s men the lead.
The rest of the first half saw Zamalek dominate possession while the Mountain Wolves relied on passes from deep, but their efforts were cleared by the sturdy defence.
The start of the second half saw a drastic change in the White Castle’s game plan as Mohamed Salah’s men sat back to defend while Khaled Kamar and Ahmed Ali were the sole players upfront.
Arab Contractors gained more confidence and started threatening Ahmed El-Shennawy with well constructed attacks, and in the 53rd minute Ernst Papa Arko fired a well placed shot at an empty Zamalek net after El-Shennawy’s faulty intervention, only for Ahmed Dewidar to clear the ball off the line.
Ernst Papa Arko was to be frustrated once again as the Ghanaian’s half-volley from inside the box was met by a diving save from El-Shennawy.
Seconds later Ayman Hefny was taken off in favour of Moruf Youssef in a defensive effort by the Zamalek coaching staff.
The Mountain Wolves had a penalty shout towards the end of the game when Ahmed Moudy fell inside the area, but Samir Osman waved play on.
Zamalek were able to hold onto their slim lead until the end, thus going top of the Egyptian Premier League table.
