Tunisian duo Esperance Tunis and Sfaxien, alongside Al Ahly and Raja Casablanca, were narrowly knocked out of the continents premier competition. This meant they would drop to the Confederations Cup second knockout stage where there was always a chance of meeting the likes of Zamalek, Etoile Sahel and Vita Club.
There was also anticipation as to the fate of Sudanese sides, Merreikh and Al Hilal, and their history making Algerian counterparts; El Eulma, Setif and USM Alger.

If Al Ahly and Zamalek progress they will be kept apart in the group stages. The former could be up against Esperance and Etoile Sahel in group A while the White knights would contend with CS Sfaxien and Orlando Pirates in group B if they manage to go through.
