Pharaohs abroad: Pre-season round-up
Ahmed Hegazy flounders for Fiorintina in loss to Paris Saint-Germain, and El-Nenny and Elmohamady secure wins in international play.
In the early weeks of international competition and pre-season friendlies, four Egyptian players prepared for the upcoming 2015-2016 season with their respective clubs this week.
Ahmed Elmohamady had an assist in Hull City’s win over Chesterfield, and Ahmed Hegazy had an early exit in Fiorentina’s loss to Paris Saint-Germain. Meanwhile, Mohammed El-Nenny and Sam Morsy made appearances this week.
Round up of this week’s matches:
Mohammed El-Nenny, FC Basel: In the first match of the 2015/16 Swiss Super League season, FC Basel cruised to a 2-0 victory over rival Liechtenstein club FC Vaduz, notching their first win. Matías Delgado opened the scoring with a penalty shot early in the first half. Yoichiro Kakitani sealed the win for Basel with an 80th minute goal.
El-Nenny played a full 90 minutes and won a few important challenges against Vaduz. He was carded in the 74th minute.
Basel has a perfect record against Vaduz, winning 9 straight games in Swiss league showdowns since 2008.
Ahmed Elmohamady, Sam Morsy: Hull City came from behind to defeat Chesterfield 3-1, securing their second match of pre-season friendlies. Harry Meguire cancelled out Ian Evatt’s opening first half goal, and Andrew Robertson and Calaum Jahraldo-Martin scored in the second half to notch the win.
Ahmed Elmohamady nearly supplied Meguire with an early goal in the 15th minute that cleared the crossbar off a cross. Elmohamady got his missed assist in the second half when he skipped around the goalkeeper and sent a back pass to Jahraldo-Martin in front of an open net. He was substituted late in the second half.

Earlier this summer, the Tigers said they would not move the 27-year-old despite other clubs’ interest.
Sam Morsy got the start for the Spireites and had a few close chances to capture a goal during the match. The budding midfielder and Chesterfield captain was substituted in the 78th minute.
Ahmed Hegazy, Fiorentina: Paris Saint-Germain knocked off Viola in a 4-2 victory in the second round of the International Champions Cup in North America. In a full Red Bull Arena in New York, PSG lead 2-0 going into the second half and never looked back. Joaquín Sánchez Rodríguez lead an attempted comeback for Fiorentina with a 60th minute goal, but PSG countered with two more goals shortly after.
Ahmed Hegazy got off to a poor start after receiving praise from commentators who referred to the 24-year-old as the “Nesta of the Pyramids,” his nickname by Italian fans. Hegazy was partially faulted with yielding PSG’s first goal. Five minutes later, a failed interception by Hegazy sent Jean-Kévin Augustin in behind him to score the second goal.
Hegazy was charged with marking Zlatan Ibrahimovic and had a chance off a header following Augestin’s goal. He was substituted in the 58th minute.
Fiorentina are winless in the friendly competition and slated to play SL Benfica Friday.
