Al Ahly defeated a poor Zamalek side 2-0 in the 111th league edition of the Cairo derby on Tuesday evening, at the Borg El Arab stadium.

Both sides headed into the encounter knowing a win would be crucial in the title race; Al Ahly wanted to increase their cushion atop the table and Zamalek wanted to decrease it to just one point.

The opening half was a cagey affair, with both sides having a couple of chances each but failing to really pose a threat, as Zamalek struggled without the tireless Tarek Hamed (injury) in the middle of the park.

Moruf Yusuf dragged a low shot wide less than four minutes into the match, while Ahly’s biggest chance of the half came through Momen; the midfielder was played in between two defenders by Evouna, but a combination of Gabr and Moruf ensured the move came to nothing.

The Red Devils’ superiority continued after the break, and it was no surprise when they took the lead after 56 minutes. Evouna carried the ball from the halfway line forward, and after turning Ali Gabr inside out, found the bottom corner coolly past the despairing El-Shennawy.

After the goal, Zizo’s men fell back noticeably, in attempt to soak up their opponents pressure and hit on the break.

Hazem Emam, Mostafa Fathi and Shikabala were thrown on by an increasingly frustrated Mido, while the hosts brought on Mohamed Hany for a troubled Ahmed Fathy.

After surviving a scare in their own area – Ekramy saved from point-blank range to deny the Whites an equaliser – substitute Gamal capped a clinical counterattack with a goal, after Sobhy’s pass released him down the right.

Saleh Gomaa – the last of Al Ahly’s substitutes – then helped his team run down the clock, as they claimed a huge victory.

Aside from the providing a huge morale boost, the win widens the gap between Al Ahly (first) and Zamalek to seven points, with 16 matches played by each side.

The league leaders travel to El Geish on Saturday, before Zamalek make the short trip to Wadi Degla on Sunday as Premier League action resumes.
