VIDEO: El-Sheikh scores brace as Al Ahly advance in Egypt Cup
Ahmed El-Sheikh scored a brace in his first official start for Al Ahly to help the Cairo giants beat second-division side Dairut in the round of 32 of Egypt Cup at Alexandria Stadium.
Al Ahly XI: Ahmed Adel Abdel-Moneim; Bassem Ali, Saad Samir, Mohamed Naguib, Hussein El-Sayed; Ahmed Fathi, Ahmed Hamdy, Amr El-Sulaya, Ahmed El-Sheikh, Walid Soliman; John Antwi.
Dairut XI: Ahmed Abou El-Souod, Khaled Mahmoud, Rimon Adel, Mahrous Mahmoud, Mohamed Ramadan, Ahmed Saleh, Ahmed Mahmoud, Hossam Yehia, Mohamed Ahmed, Mohamed Essam, Omar Gad.
Al Ahly started the game fiercely as they tried to secure an early goal to avoid any upsets from the second-division side. Hussein El-Sayed was awarded a foul on the edge of the box after six minutes but Ahmed Fathi’s shot hit the wall before it went close to the right post.
Eleven minutes from the start, Fathi gave Al Ahly the lead. The 31-year-old received the ball at the edge of the penalty area before smashing it into the net.
Al Ahly continued to dominate the game aiming to double their lead. Hussein El-Sayed beat three Dairut defenders but his shot wasn’t strong enough to hit the target and was cleared by the defenders.
John Antwi squandered a chance to double the lead as his right foot shot from outside the box went above the post in the 30th minute. The first half ended 1-0 as Al Ahly failed to add more goals.
Sixteen minutes into the second half, Ahmed El-Sheikh, who joined the Red Castle during the 2015 summer transfer window, managed to score his first official goal for Al Ahly. Dairut’s goalkeeper failed to deal with Fathi’s cross, only for El-Sheikh to tap into the empty net and score his club’s second goal of the game.
Three minutes later, El-Sheikh completed his brace. After an impressive effort from the left side, El-Sheikh beat two defenders before his shot found the net.
El-Sheikh sent a cross to Ahmed Hamdi in the 73rd minute, but the Al Ahly youngster’s shot went wide. The last ten minutes of the game witnessed complete domination of Al Ahly.
Veteran striker Emad Meteb, who came on to replace Walid Soliman in the 71st minute, missed a huge chance to score the fourth goal. He went one-on-one with the goalkeeper but his 81st-minute shot was saved.
The game ended 3-0 for the Red Devils who advanced to face Haras El-Hodood in the round of 16 of Egypt Cup.
