Egypt to face Ghana in World Cup qualifiers

Posted on June 24, 2016

World Cup
Egypt were drawn in the same group as Ghana in Africa’s final round of qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, following the draw held in Cairo on Friday.

Seven-time African champions Egypt were drawn against Ghana, Congo and Uganda in Group E, as the Pharaohs will attempt to make their third World Cup appearance and their first since 1990.

Egypt will be looking to revenge for their loss against Ghana in 2013, when they failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup after losing 7-3 on aggregate to the Black Stars in the final round of the qualifiers.

Due to FIFA’s special ranking that has sparked controversy over the past weeks; Egypt failed to avoid Ghana, one of the five top seeded teams, as they were placed in Pot 2.

Egypt will start their qualification campaign in Congo, while their second game will be against Ghana in Egypt. They will then play Uganda away and home, respectively, before hosting Congo in their fifth match. The Pharaohs will end their group matches with an away game against Ghana.

The winners of each of the five groups will advance to represent Africa in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Such an easy group for Tunisia while Morocco and Algeria are in the two groups of death. If Egypt was in pot 1 we would definitely go to the world cup. But Egypt going to the world cup beating Ghana would be the best feeling. Not an easy group for Egypt but it’s not impossible.. As long as we don’t make tactical mistakes again like against Ghana….

How is it a mistake being beating 6-1 in Kumasi? The reason for Ghana losing 2-1 on the return match was because qualification had already been achieved. Egypt is no match for Ghana. Though l would have loved to see Egypt qualified, Ghana is too difficult a team to overcome. Too bad Tunisia was seeded, instead of Egypt.

Well the players didn’t have their day same like the stupid Coach we had. Instead of leaving it 2-1 and play on the counter he was attacking which made us weak in the game. Anyways the Egyptian competition was stopped during the turmoil of that time. Now we have the Egyptian competition started for three years. There is stability in Egyptian football. The guys are improving and got already the confidence by beating a great country like nigeria. We didn’t qualify for 3 times in a row for the african cup but now we did by beating nigeria. A big sign that Egypt is improving more and more and will beat Ghana.

I wish caf can adopt the way how south american countries qualify. Because atimes good teams remain in africa and weak teams go. Ghanians have a war of words. If football was not played on the pitch, ghana would be world champions coz they can talk. Lets wait for the games.

We will make you cry like we did at the CAN 2010 final ;)). Egypt is getting strong again my friend so don’t think your Ghana will make us afraid. We are determined to beat your a ss off again

        June 25, 2016 at 7:20 PM

You barely beat Nigeria and now think you can beat Ghana? What you don’t seem to realize is that Ghana is going to be even stronger than when it won by 6-1.

Well the fact that many Ghanese people are commenting here proves that you are afraid of the 7-time African Champions. Egypt has new talented players now who are more experienced at the moment. The pharao’s will disappoint Ghana just like we disapointed Nigeria 😉

And why is Ghana stronger now? Did they win a title or something? I see them at the same level as 3 years ago. Meanwhile Egypts level improved and is improving more and more.

When will CAF realize that this qualification method is just bad and unserving for it? You can’t go from 20 teams to 5 and expect you’re getting the 5 best to represent you on the world’s biggest stage… And then people act surprised when African teams fail to perform.

It’s a good group for us. No North African teams and no super underdogs against whom we tend to play unfocused and negligently lose points. But there aren’t any “small” teams left anyway in this year’s last round. I have an extremely good feeling, just hope FIFA won’t pull any scam on us again.

We have to be humble after what happened last time with Ghana. However we are now better and with an active league, and they don’t seem as strong as before. Additionally, the 6-1 result may give them too much confidence, which may allow us an opportunity to capitalize. Additionally, we should treat every team equally as to not be surprised.

Ghananians expect the Blackstars in Russia. Nothing short of that. They are not seeing any team but just Russia. Secondly any team that will attempt to go to Russia will have to pass through the gate of KUMASI.

What substance? The West African team is not moved by Egypt at all. Egypt actually is not happy to go through Ghana.

Africa should have more seats….Issa Hayato is not doing a good job…Group seconds should play Europe’s 9th-13th especially after Brexit 🙂

Ghana know they are in a group with another pot one team and whatever they say they won’t be happy. Egypt are the team none of the top seeds wanted to draw. I think this group could go to goal difference.

Tunisia were lucky and hopefully slip up because they’re really not that good. Algeria always get easy groups, not this time.

Tunisia are really good they always get hard groups except this time, hopefully Tunisia does make it to the world cup and Tunisia is a strong team

No they are not and you won’t persuade any Egyptian that they are.

Tunisia would do much better than Egypt in the World Cup, Tunisia has a better than Egypt right now. If Egypt are better than Tunisia why wont they qualify to the world cup and stop being arrogant

    Pharoe Forget Russia,
    The Black Star is mightier,
    C’mon Ghana
    The pride of Africa.

Ghana went to the last world cup and started fighting about money. If you think that is pride, then okay.

But you will not. Ghana will win in cairo 2:0 and 4:0 in kumasi. GO BLACK STARS – egypt has no chance 🙂 🙂 🙂

It is just funny how all these Ghanese people think that their team is the new Spain or Germany. You are just Ghana and have proved nothing yet. I won’t talk much again. The Pharaoh’s will disappoint all the Ghanese here. You are playing against the kings of Africa. I can’t even remember that Ghana won the african cup even once. Cairo will become your nightmare guys. But nothing is better than disappointing people who are over confident of their team.

          June 28, 2016 at 7:41 PM

If Egypt are the Kings of Africa then Ghana are the Kings of the world in Africa with the best world cup performance among African teams ever…

In the AFCON Egypt has won 7 Ghana 4… two of those 7 Ghana did not even participate 57 and 59. so really it is 5 to 4…

Ghana has been to AFCON the final 9 times
          Egypt 8 (including 57 and 59).

That being said Ghana has not won it in 30+ years and should try hard to win 2017. If Egypt is better in AFCON then Ghana is definitely much better for the world cup!

On paper Ghana has better players, a better coach, and more pedigree at the world cup level.

But egypt has great head to head records against European teams. Egypt 1-0 Italy 2009. Egypt 4-0 Belgium 2005. Egypt 2-1 Germany 1958 egypt 2-1 Netherlands 1928. Egypt 2-1 Portugal 1928. Egypt 2-0 Bosnia 2014

There is nothing like revenge here. We rather avenged the defeat handed us in the 2010 finalsEgypt for sure is about to play one of the best games of their lives in November- constant. The question is what kind of blackstars would show up. My headache is how we would play in Kampala. It has always been tough out there. . This is one match in 6 games and its the normal away rule- utilize set pieces and simply openings and posses the ball to avoid trouble and defend when necessary. We are not the super vultures of Nigeria
