Zamalek scraped a 2-1 victory over Arab Contractors in the 28th round of the Egyptian Premier League on Sunday.

The White Knights had an unusual pacey start, which lasted throughout most periods of the first half.

Fifteen minutes into the game, Ibrahim Salah almost opened the scoring after receiving a brilliant cross from Refaat but his effort was just inches far from the post.

Five minutes later, Emmanuel Mayuka almost proved Augusto Inácio right in choosing him for the game, after he sent a decent curling effort from outside the penalty area, however, he was just unlucky as the shot didn’t end in the back of the net.

Twenty-five minutes into the game, the referee awarded the White Knights a controversial penalty after Stanley Ohawuchi collided with Shawky in an aerial challenge and Refaat managed to convert the ball perfectly into Mohamed Aboul-Seoud’s net.

Five minutes before the half-time whistle, Zamalek had their last chance of the first half as Ayman Hefny skied his effort far from the goal following a deflected through ball from Salah.

The second half was completely different for Contractors, as they began to complete their counter attacks from both flanks of the pitch, which resulted in a couple of decent crosses for the hosts but they were denied by Ahmed El-Shennawy’s perfectly timed saves.

Appeals for a Contractors penalty were turned down by the referee in the 57th minute.

A minute later Mohamed Ouda brought on Karim Mostafa instead of Omar Gamal before Zamalek’s Mostafa Fathi replaced Refaat.

Contractors looked more dangerous after the substitution, while Zamalek felt the pressure that was perfectly placed by Contractors, as they haven’t given them any other option but to make their second substitution by bringing on Tarek Hamed for Mahmoud Dunga after 68 minutes.

Ouda then brought on Mohamed Fadl for Didier Koré, after feeling the need of bringing in another midfield player to revive Contractors’ chances and get back in the game.

Just 16 minutes before the final whistle, Contractors began a perfect counter-attack, which led to scoring an equaliser after a brilliant solo effort from Mohamed Farouk.

However, it didn’t last long for Contractors as Zamalek regained their lead seconds later after a brilliant long ball from Hamed that landed just on Osama Ibrahim’s foot who was able to cross it for Stanley, as the Nigerian striker finished it with a decent lob shot in the far post.

Inácio killed the game with his final substitution just 10 minutes before the final whistle by bringing on Rico for Hefny in an attempt to control the midfield battle.

Following the victory, Zamalek are third on 51 points, seven clear of fourth-placed Al Masry, who have two games in hand. Contractors are 11th in the league standings with 34 points.

Zamalek’s next game will be in the CAF Champions League against CAPS United on Friday.
