Wigan Athletic has appointed former Portsmouth manager Paul Cook as the first team’s manager following the team’s relegation to League One.

Cook’s appointment as manager comes after he led Portsmouth to promotion from League Two, and he penned a three-year contract with the Latics.

The 50-year-old will once again work with Egypt international Sam Morsy after their stint together at Chesterfield ended with Cook’s departure to Portsmouth.

Cook is set to take over after interim manager Graham Barrow, who took over after Wigan’s sacking of Warren Joyce.

Wigan’s relegation to the third tier division is their second time in the last five seasons.
