A late goal from Saleh Gomaa helped maintain their unbeaten run in the Egyptian Premier League this season as they drew 1-1 with Al Masry on Tuesday.

Al Ahly, who have already secured the league title, faced the Port Said-based side in gameweek 33 without a number of key players, who were being rested ahead of Saturday’s crucial clash against Coton Sport in the CAF Champions League.

Al Masry’s Mohamed El-Shamy forced Al Ahly keeper Ahmed Adel Abdel-Moneim into a fine save in the first 10 minutes, which saw the hosts control possession.

The league champions’ most dangerous chance came eight minutes before the break when Hussein El-Sayed shot from inside the box went just over the bar.

El-Sayed had another chance right before half-time but his free-kick from the edge of the box went just wide as the first half ended goalless.

Al Ahly manager Hossam El-Badry brought on to replace veteran striker Emad Meteb, who made a rare start for the Red Castle this season, at the one-hour mark. Bassem Ali and Ahmed Ramadan ‘Beckham’ then came on instead of El-Sayed and Hossam Ghaly.

Ten minutes from full time, El-Shamy opened the scoring for Al Masry following a through ball that allowed him to go one-on-one with Al Ahly keeper.

As Al Ahly pushed for an equaliser, substitute Ali put the ball over the bar while the net was wide open before Gomaa levelled for the guests in the 88th minute. The 23-year-old midfielder made a sliding tackle on Al Masry defender before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

Al Ahly, who will face Zamalek in their final league fixture, remain undefeated this season after collecting 81 points from 24 wins and 9 draws. Meanwhile, Al Masry, who have already secured a top-four finish, sit fourth on 59 points.
