International midfielder has been named as Wigan Athletic’s captain for the 2017-18 season.

The 25-year-old began the 2016-2017 Championship season on loan at Barnsley, playing 14 times, before former Wigan manager Warren Joyce recalled him in January and the midfielder committed his future to the Latics by signing a new two-and-a-half-year contract.

His return, however, was not enough to keep Wigan away from League One as they were relegated after winning just 10 league games.

Morsy wore the armband for manager Paul Cook when he managed the Egyptian at Chesterfield and the Latics boss is confident in Sam’s ability to lead the team.

“Samy is a player I know very well,” Cook said. “I trust him, he is a natural leader who plays with passion and desire and is a great motivator to those around him. He leads by example,” he added.

Morsy, who will wear the number 5 shirt, is the third Egyptian player to play for Wigan after Amr Zaki and Ahmed Hossam ‘Mido’.

Wigan Athletic’s first game of the season will be against MK Dons at Stadium mk on Saturday, August 5.
