Basel romp to victory with Mohamed Salah on for the full 90 minutes
FC Basel romped to a 4-1 win over big spending Sion in the midweek game at Basel’s St. Jakob’s Park. The home side went ahead in the 42nd minute with a strike by former Liverpool and Dortmund man Philipp Degen but were pegged back almost immediately with a goal from ex-Milan man Genaro Gattuso.
In the 55th minute Philipp Degen doubled his tally, before Valentin Stocker, who impressed after coming on for Salah as a substitute in the previous match away at Young Boys, struck to make it 3-1. With 10 minutes remaining Gaston Sauro completed the rout.
Former Espérance playmaker Oussama Darragi, a summer acquisition for Sion, received a yellow card for a foul on Salah after the latter was about to spin past the Tunisian international and another Sion player.
Difficult to highlight Mohamed Salah’s performance as stand-out, but good to see that coach Heiko Vogel sees fit to play both him and Valentin Stocker after the latter’s great performance replacing him in the previous match. The match sees Basel return to form and sends out a message to St Gallen and Grasshoppers at the top of the league that if they’re to wrestle the title away from Basel, after three consecutive wins, then they’re going to have to be good.
