Salah starts as FC Basel seal Champions League spot with win over Ludogorets
Swiss side FC Basel have sealed their fifth appearance in the UCL group stage by beating Ludugorets Razgrad 2-0 in the second leg of their UCL qualifier, having already won 4-2 in Bulgaria thanks to a brace goals from Salah.
Basel started with their usual 4-2-3-1 formation with Salah completing 70 minutes from the start while fellow Egyptian Mohamed El-Nenny had to settle for a place on the bench for the entire game as he was replaced by Xhaka in the starting lineup.
15,733 fans were present at the St.Jacob Park tonight witnessing Basel take control over most parts of the tie with their first real chance coming in the eleventh minute by Frei scoring his first Champions League goal from a Diaz corner.
Not far after, the visitors came close with Stoyanov striking the ball from an unusual position only for Sommer to tip it onto the bar on it’s way out for a corner.
Basel striker Sio came close on a number of occasions with his best chance hitting the left post after he successfully took on his man in the 16th minute.
Two minutes after he came on for Basel, former Liverpool defender Philipp Degen scored from a Delgado corner to end this tie on the 79th minute.
It is worth mentioning that Salah had a very quite game tonight often switching position from left to right to center hoping to get into better positions from there but that wasn’t the case although he was often cheered from the fans when he had the ball and on his way out.
FC Basel will now wait to know who will be included in their UCL group, the draw is to be done next Thursday.
