World Cup Qualifying Roundup: Egypt stranded in Pot 2 as Nigeria, Cape Verde reach play-offs

Nigeria National Team

Nigeria and Cape Verde both reached the final round with victories over Malawi and Tunisia respectively, eliminating Egypt’s hopes of reaching Pot 1

With Cape Verde’s 2-0 win in Tunisia, Egypt no longer have a chance of reaching Pot 1 in Africa’s final stage of World Cup qualifying and are now set to face either Ivory Coast, Algeria, Ghana, Nigeria or Cape Verde in the play-off round – five home-and-away fixtures played in October and November to determine the five Africa nations which progress to Brazil 2014.

The result the Pharaohs achieve against Guinea on September 10th is now essentially meaningless, with Egypt already confirmed Group G winners and having no chance of breaking into the seeded pot.

Pot 1: Algeria, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria

Pot 2: Egypt, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Cameroon/Libya, Senegal

The draw that will determine the play-off matchups will take place on Monday, September 16 in Cairo.

is the draw going to be random, or is it going to be based on seedings such as the highest ranked team in pot 1 plays the lowest ranked team in pot 2?

I hope we will be drawn to Cape Verde. But Ghana, Nigeria and Ivoy Coast are all beatable. I think Algeria would be the worst-case scenario, especially in the current political situation.
