CONFIRMED: Ghana shift date for Egypt World Cup play-off first leg
The date for the much anticipated 2014 Brazil World Cup qualifying match – first leg play-off between the Black Stars of Ghana and the Pharaohs of Egypt has been shifted from Sunday 13th October to Tuesday 15th October.
The main reason behind the change of date is to give the Black Stars’ coach more time to assess his crop of players and have enough preparation time for the team, the Ghana Football Association have confirmed.
A statement on the Ghana Football Association website read: “The decision is meant to give Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah more training time with the team before the match in Kumasi.”
The previous date of 13th October is known to the Ashanti Kingdom as a”AKWASIDAE”- a day of Cleansing and the match venue is cited in same empire.
It is believed even the local clubs (Asante Kotoko SC and King Faisal Babies) who use the said venue on same “Akwasidae” days lose their games and could affect the Black Stars should they also host Egypt on same “Akwasidae” day.
The Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi remains the venue for the match. Kick off will be at 16:00GMT.
