Hull City 1-0 Swansea City – Boyd returns with a bang
Ahmed Elmohamady’s Hull City took another giant step towards another season in the Premier League after a 1-0 victory over Swansea City at the KC Stadium.
George Boyd returned from his three game suspension to head in the only goal of the match six minutes before the half-time break.
Hull City headed into this fixture at the KC Stadium looking to make amends having suffered back-to-back away defeats at West Ham and Stoke City. On the cusp of a Wembley FA Cup Semi-Final appearance manager Steve Bruce opted to make two change to his team. Influential midfielder Tom Huddlestone, who was nursing a groin and back injury, was rested in favour of bringing in the now available George Boyd, who has now served his three game suspension following his spitting incident with Joe Hart. Elsewhere Alex Bruce was dropped from the team in favour of Maynor Figueroa who slotted in at left-back.
Swansea were afforded the luxury of no injuries from their previous encounter and Gary Monk named an unchanged team from the one that comprehensively beat Norwich City 3-0 last time out.
Hull City: Harper – Rosenior – Davies – Chester – Figeuroa – Elmohamady – Meyler – Livermore – Boyd – Jelavic – Long
Subs: Jakupovic – Bruce – Koren – Fryatt – Sagbo – Aluko – Quinn
Swansea City – Vorm – Rangel – Chico Flores – Williams – Davies – Britton – Shelvey – De Guzman – Routledge – Michu – Bony
Subs: Tremmel – Amat – Taylor – Hernandez – Dyer – Lita – Canas
Before kick-off Steve Bruce had set a target of ten wins to see his side retain their top flight status and were so nearly on their way to that mark as early as the 9th minute. The recalled Maynor Figueroa swung in a fantastic delivery from the left flank which came to Shane Long at the back post whose volley was denied by an outstanding save by Vorm in the Swansea goal.
George Boyd fashioned a chance after cutting in from the left but his shot caused Vorm no problems before Wayne Routledge released Jonathan De Guzman after some neat touches but the latter’s shot was blocked by Figueroa.
A deflected Michu pass in the 28th minute fell to Routledge, who had spotted Steve Harper off his line, but his chipped effort was straight into the arms of the veteran goalkeeper.
Long, who was a constant thorn in the away team side, won a free-kick on the half hour mark after being fouled by Chico Flores. Nikica Jelavic stepped up to take the set-piece but smashed his effort over the bar.
The only goal of the game came in the 39th minute when a superb Liam Rosenior cross found the head of George Boyd who found the net to mark his comeback with a goal.
For all of their attacking quality Swansea fashioned little to no chances in the first-half and introduced Nathan Dyer at the expense of De Guzman for added pace on the flanks.
Four minutes into the second-half and that pace became immediately evident when Dyer raced through only for Figueroa to pull off a last ditch tackle to dispossess the midfielder.
After good hold-up play by Wilfried Bony the striker set up Jonjo Shelvey but his shot was hit straight at Harper who gathered at the second attempt.
Five minutes after the Shelvey chance the Swans created arguably their best of the game when Routledge drilled a cross across the box which fell to Dyer on the left but his tame effort couldn’t even find the target.
Shelvey blazed a shot over the bar but Hull held on to claim all three points much to the delight of the home support who will no doubt be seeing Premier League football next season.
Ahmed Elmohamady put in the usual solid performance for 90 minutes and helped his side get a clean sheet and the three points.
