Ahmed Hamoudi set the Egyptian Premier League alight with his spectacular performances since 2012, earning him massive appraise. He is arguably considered the standout player in the 2013/14 season, attracting the eyes of Swiss giants FC Basel, who signed him for a fee of about €800,000. It is hoped that he’ll follow the footsteps of fellow Egyptian national team player Mohamed Salah and earn himself a transfer to a club of Chelsea’s stature in the coming years.
At the age of 19 the tricky winger helped Smouha achieve their first-ever promotion to the top flight during the 2009/10 season, since the club was established in 1949. He featured 25 times for the Alexandrians the following year – the club’s first season in the Egyptian Premier League – scoring two goals.
Despite the cancellation of the next two seasons, Hamoudi showed glimpses of brilliance during the 2012/13 season under Shawky Gharib, earning him his first handful of national team call ups from American coach Bob Bradley, albeit only appearing in international friendlies. 2013/14 was his real breakout season however as he led Smouha, under the helm of Hamada Sedky, to their first CAF Champions League qualification in history, after losing the league on goal difference to Al Ahly. He later scored two goals in the 2-1 Egyptian Cup semi-final win over the Red Devils, but Smouha narrowly lost in the final against Zamalek.
The talismanic winger was the creative hub and difference maker for a Smouha side that were unlucky not to win any silverware this season. He scored 14 goals and provided 5 assists in 24 games in all competitions, and his monumental efforts for his club led KingFut readers to vote for him as the Player of the Season in a recent poll, with 40% of the total votes.
Style of Play:
The mercurial midfielder can play on the right flank using his left foot to cut inside or as a number ten, as his great technical ability allows him to create numerous goal scoring opportunities. Hamoudi can also score wonderful goals as well as create them with the powerful left foot he possesses. He’s well comfortable with the ball at his feet and relishes taking on players with occasional selfishness.
His great pace and acceleration are of great benefit to him in tight spots as he can individually create space for himself whenever needed. Hamoudi’s poor stamina sometimes causes his disappearance as the match progresses, but his outstanding skill set, pace and shooting power make him a constant threat in front of goal.
