EXCLUSIVE: Denis Lavagne aims for historic Champions League run with Smouha
Recently-appointed French coach Denis Lavagne shed some insight on what to expect from Smouha under his management this season.
French manager Denis Lavagne signed his contract with Alexandrian club Smouha early on Friday – following the sacking of Hamada Sedky – and exclusively discussed his aims with KingFut.com at the end of his first press conference.
Smouha are on the back of the most successful season in their history, finishing runners-up in the Egyptian Premier League and Cup.
The Alexandrians are set to compete in one more competition this season, the African Champions League, for the first time in the club’s history.
Lavagne previously reached the CAF Champions league final with Cameroonian club Coton Sport but lost 4-2 on aggregate to Al Ahly in 2008.
Regarding the club’s aims in the African competition, Lavagne told KingFut’s Marwan Ahmed: “This is a tough competition, also the first time the club will be participating in it.”
“We should at least aim to reach the quarter-finals, then we will see what happens. The current team is able to achieve that,” he said.
The Blue Wave were in terrific form last season in the league – only failing to claim the title on goal difference – and Lavagne aims to build on that.
“Smouha are a good club, they finished last season highly. We should be aiming for one of the top two positions, not less,” the former Cameroon national team coach concluded.
Smouha currently lie 6th in the league table with 7 points after four matches played.
