Exclusive: El-Nenny proud of African Player of the Year nomination
Egypt’s Mohamed El-Nenny expresses his delight to KingFut.com following his 2014 CAF Player of the Year nomination, and discusses FC Basel’s chances of advancing to the UEFA Champions League knock-out stage.
Mohamed El-Nenny was chosen amongst 25 nominees for the prestigious African accolade, being the only Egyptian included in the list.
Mahmoud ‘Bibo’ El-Khatib is the only player in the history of Egypt to have ever won the prize – in 1983 – and the 22-year-old hopes to follow in the Egyptian legend’s footsteps.
“I’m very happy with my inclusion. It is an honour for me to be considered and any African player would be proud,” El-Nenny told KingFut’s Marwan Ahmed.
Regarding his chances of winning the prize, El-Nenny said: “Whatever God has written will happen.”
El-Nenny, who extended his contract with FC Basel until 2018 towards the end of the summer, was the only Egyptian to have made the list of nominees for 2014, while last year Mohamed Abou-Treika, now retired, and Mohamed Salah were included.
“Of course I wished that [other] Egyptians players would’ve been considered but thank God for everything and this is His will.”
Amr Gamal was the only other player from Egypt shortlisted for one of CAF’s Player of the Year awards this year, the best Africa-based player, and Mohamed thinks the Ahly striker deserves to win.
“God willing he has written the prize for him [Gamal] because he deserves to win it.”
El-Nenny has been one of the brightest performers for Egypt this qualifying campaign as the Pharaohs face an uphill task to reach the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring against Botswana during the previous international break while assisting both goals in the subsequent match.
Shawky Gharib’s team next take on a tough Senegal side on the 15th of November in Cairo, five days before an arguably even harder fixture, away against Tunisia.
“God willing we will win and qualify from the group. We are mentally ready and I can see that we are up to the task.”
FC Basel are having a decent UEFA Champions League campaign thus far, having been placed in the same group as European champions Real Madrid and Premier League runners-up Liverpool, but against the odds, El-Nenny’s side are currently second in the group with two games to go.
The former Arab Contractors youngster believes the Swiss champions have what it takes to reach this year’s knock-out stages, and describes being able to play at the Santiago Bernabéu as ‘amazing’.
“We can qualify from the group. It was amazing to play on Real Madrid’s pitch. It was also big to play against Liverpool and even bigger to actually beat them,” El-Nenny concluded.
KingFut.com would like to thank Mohamed El-Nenny for his time and wishes him all the best in his future endeavours.
