Zimbabwe expelled from 2018 World Cup
The committee said the action was taken “as a result of the non-payment of an outstanding debt” to Brazilian manager José Claudinei Georgini.
FIFA added that Zimbabwe’s football federation (ZIFA) failed to pay the dues even despite an extended grace period.
The decision came just as 2018 World Cup qualifying was getting underway, with six matches in Asia.
There’s no indication yet regarding if or how Zimbabwe’s exclusion will affect the qualifying procedure in Africa.
Georgini managed Zimbabwe’s national team from January to November 2008.
FIFA has been giving ZIFA direct orders to satisfy the debt since 2012.
ZIFA is in the midst of a severe financial crisis and is a reported $4 million in debt.
