Ex-Egypt national team coach Gharib sits with new coach Héctor Cúper
TV footage showed the ex-manager with a file in hand entering the hotel where the national team is currently staying to prepare for their first game under Cúper. The team is to play a friendly against Equatorial Guinea on Thursday.
Speaking of his visit, Gharib said: “In the end, we’re all Egyptians and we all support our national team. And if I wasn’t able to realize people’s expectations during my time as coach and now there’s a new coach, we all need to stand beside him.”
Gharib explained that with the presence of Osama Nabih in Cúper’s staff, who also worked in Gharib’s staff, “there was this idea that we could all sit together. Cúper said he’d be happy to sit with the previous manager and I said this is a positive step.”
“I have a report covering everything from my time as manager. I translated it to Spanish for him and he was surprised to find it in Spanish.”
“We sat together for three hours during which he asked me about the players, about their positions and everything. In the report, I had also noted my personal errors as a coach, why I committed them, what my intent was by this or that decision.”
Gharib said he warned the Argentine about games that are played while the league is stopped, such as the start of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next September. “We usually lose or draw in the games we play in August. I told him we have to be careful of this fact and plan for it.”
