Abou-Rida: It was logical to vote for Qatar
Following the recent corruption charges regarding how Russia and Qatar won the vote for organising the 2018 and 2022 World Cup in which Hany Abou-Rida, Egypt’s representative in the FIFA and CAF Executive Committee, was set to be questioned about voting for Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup.
Abou-Rida spoke to Egyptian news channel ONTV, clarifying the issue: “Hearings are optional and could be either attend or not. Generally, I’ll tell you why I voted for Qatar and this is what I say everywhere.”
The EFA vice president went on to justify Egypt’s vote for Qatar to organise the 2022 World Cup, using various claims to back up the vote: “Back then, there was coordination with the Egyptian side, Egypt was going to make political gains and I was communicating with the regime back then and this is what we agreed on [voting for Qatar].”
“Let us think calmly, voting for Qatar will bring benefits to all neighbouring countries which is why we favoured that file.”
“Japan, Korea, USA and Australia were competing with Qatar. All of them, except for Australia, had hosted the championship before.”
“Australia’s time difference with Europe is very big, hence it was going to generate less money in terms of TV broadcasting etc.”
“When the World Cup was hosted in Korea and Japan the profit was low, so it was logical to vote for Qatar.”
