Equestrian: American Pharoah becomes first Triple Crown winner for the first time in 37 years
American Pharoah racehorse won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday to become the 12th Triple Crown winner after winning 7 out of 7 races.
The racehorse which is owned by Egyptian, Ahmed Zayat, broke 37-year-old record to join the list of 11 Triple Crown winners.
The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing consists of three races for three-year-old Thoroughbred horses. Winner has to win its three races which are the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.
“We won an unbelievable race in my own state. I have been extremely confident all week. I looked at my wife in the post parade and I told her get ready to be the owner of the 12th Triple Crown winner. He looked unbelievable: focused, relaxed, full of energy.” said owner Ahmed Zayat on the podium.
Horses lover, Zayat is a 52-year-old entrepreneur living in Teaneck, New Jersey. He currently owns 144 horses in his stable.
With a misspelled name, American Pharoah won by five and half lengths which is the third biggest winning margin in Belmont Stakes race history.
“I personally have made a promise to my family and to the fans before anyone else: We need to enjoy our stars and race them as long as we possibly could,” Zayat said.
Zayat said that American Pharoah will almost retire at the end of this year but he also implied that the horse might continue.
“His stud fees have been sold. He most probably will retire at the end of this year. Can this change? Possibly. I can’t promise. I don’t make that decision.” he concluded.
Ironically, Zayat almost sold the Triple crown winner last year but managed to buy him back at auction for $300,000 because the bidding was not going as high as he thought it would.
