Egypt to face Senegal in friendly in October

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced Thursday plans to play a friendly against Senegal in Dubai on October 8 in preparation for 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying.

Despite saying last week the Pharaohs would take on Cameroon and Australia on October 8 and October 13, respectively, the EFA revealed the cancellation of these two matches and confirmed a new opponent: Les Lions of Senegal.

Additionally, the EFA announced plans to host Burkina Faso in a friendly on October 12. If the Burkinabé are not available, the Pharaohs will again play Senegal, either in Cairo or in Dubai.

The Pharaohs last came up against Senegal during the qualifiers for the 2015 African Cup of Nations Qualifiers. The Senegalese won both games, dispatching of Shawki Gharib’s Egypt side 2-0 in Dakar and 1-0 in Cairo.

Egypt’s World Cup qualifying campaign kicks-off in November. The Pharaohs will be awaiting the winner of the October home-and-away playoff between Sierra Leone and Chad to see who it will face in its own World Cup qualifying playoff a month later.

Egypt and Chad faced-off recently in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. The Pharaohs made quick work of their Group G opponent with a 5-1 away win.

Sierra Leone had a positive result of its own that same weekend, holding African champions Ivory Coast to a scoreless draw in their AFCON qualifier.

The Leone Stars will be favorites to advance past Chad in October and would be a difficult test for an Egyptian side looking to end what would be a 28-year World Cup drought.

Egypt and Sierra Leone have only ever met twice before, with Egypt failing to win either contest.

Egypt. Arsenal. UNC. Al Ahly. In that order.
