Chad takes playoff lead as Egypt awaits
Chad will take a 1-0 advantage into the second leg of their 2018 World Cup qualifying playoff against Sierra Leone thanks to Léger Djimrangar’s second-half strike in N’Djamena.
Sierra Leone remain favorites to advance, but will need to cancel out the 23 year-old Djimrangar’s goal in the return leg.
That contest is slated for Tuesday in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
FIFA has forced Sierra Leone to play its home matches on neutral territory due to the continued presence of the deadly Ebola virus in the West African nation.
The winner will take on Egypt in another home-and-away playoff in November.
The winner of that tie will advance to the group stage, with only only the group winners advancing to the finals in Russia.
Egypt is looking to end what would be a 28-year World Cup finals drought.
Neither Chad nor Sierra Leone has ever qualified for world football’s showpiece event.
