Mohamed Abdel-Shafy features as Ahli clinch domestic treble

Al Ahli Jeddah have secured the domestic treble after winning the 2016 Super Cup against arch-rivals Al-Hilal on penalties.

Craven Cottage Stadium in London played host to the 2016 Saudi Super Cup carrying on from Loftus Road, which was the venue last year for the match between Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr,

Omar Al Somah’s form was key to the league champions and the Syrian forward came close from scoring after just three minutes, but the Al-Hilal defence managed to clear the danger.

Al-Hilal forced their way into the match after 25 minutes, as club icon Al-Shalhoub exchanged passes with Nawaf Al Abed before the latter fired wide.

Al Ahli goalkeeper Yasser Al-Mousailam was called into action just before halftime, saving a good header from Al Ruwailli.

In the second half, Al-Hilal dominance of proceedings paid off, as they managed to score the first goal of the night through Al-Breik’s direct freekick in the 60th minute.

Nevertheless, Al Somah quickly equalized after six minutes, as he turned Al-Mogahwi’s pass into the back of the net.

There was no major action in the last 20 minutes, as the match headed to penalties.

The shootout saw the Al Ahli goalkeeper produce to fine saves to stop Al Hilal’s Hasawi and Ruwailli, and Al Somah converted the winning penalty to secure a 4-3 victory for Al Ahli, who have completed a domestic treble in 2016.
