Defiant Al Masry come back to end Smouha’s winning start
Al Masry sealed a first-half comeback to defeat a careless Smouha side 1-2 at the Borg El Arab stadium in Alexandria and end the hosts’ winning start to the season.
Smouha came into the match on the back of a four-match winning streak to start the 2016/17 Egyptian Premier League season, and were looking to make it five wins out of five against an Al Masry side that had lost two of their four matches so far.
The hosts’ impressive streak looked set to continue when Ahmed Raouf opened the scoring in the 12th minute against his former club.
However, the Port Said-based outfit hit back in the 30th minute through Ahmed Gomaa, who was set up by Ahmed Samir.
Nine minutes later, Ayman Ashraf clumsily conceded foul inside the penalty area and the referee duly pointed to the spot.
Osama Azab coolly dispatched the resulting spot-kick to put Al Masry in the lead for the first time in the match.
Despite their best efforts in the second half, Smouha were unable to find a way back into the match. To add insult to injury, Ahmed Temsah received a straight red in the 78th minute and headed off for an early shower.
Smouha’s next league match will be against reigning Egypt Cup champions Zamalek, with kickoff scheduled for Thursday, October 27.
