The $1.5 million prize money awarded to Mamelodi Sundowns for winning the 2016 CAF Champions League title will be divided amongst the players, several news outlets reported on Monday.

Sundowns were crowned African champions despite losing the second leg 1-0 against Zamalek at the Borg El-Arab Stadium. The South African side won 3-1 on aggregate to lift their first ever continental title.

Club chairman Patrice Motsepe revealed that the offical prize awarded to the club for winning the African title will be split between the players.

“All of the $1.5 million – it’s all theirs. They must now sit down and start thinking about how they are going to divide that money amongst themselves‚” Motsepe was quoted saying, according to several news reports.

Motsepe, who purchased the South African club in 2003, advised the players not to use all the money, and to invest it instead.

“I just said to them‚ Guys‚ don’t waste the money now. Take some of that money and invest it. It will benefit you when your football days are over,” he added.

While Sundowns will receive a total of $1.5 million for winning the title, runners-up Zamalek will get $1 million.

This is how Sundowns roll. Everytime they win, the players split the money.
