Algeria international and Gabon striker are the only two African players included in a 30-man shortlist for the 2016 Ballon d’Or award.

Mahrez has been impressing with Leicester City over the past season, winning the 2015-16 English Premier League title and becoming the first African player to be named the 2016 Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year.

The 25-year-old has scored four goals and provided two assists this season with Leicester City, who are leading their UEFA Champions League group and gaining the maximum number of points so far.

Aubameyang’s scoring habits have earned him a place in the shortlist after a prolific year with German side Borussia Dortmund. He scored 39 and provided 12 assists in all competitions in the 2015-16 season.

The 27-year-old seems to be on track as he has scored 10 goals so far this season and provided two assists.

The shortlist sees the absence of out-of-favour Ivory Coast and Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, who was included in last year’s shortlist.

Both nominees face tough competitions with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi also included in the Ballon d’Or shortlist.
