Smouha withstood a late onslaught from Ismaily at the Borg El Arab stadium as they clinched a 2-1 win at the Borg El Arab stadium on Monday, in the Egyptian Premier League.

Smouha were gunning for maximum points in their encounter with Ismaily to close the gap between themselves and Al Ahly, who drew 2-2 with Ittihad of Alexandria on Sunday evening.

The Alexandrian outfit were also keen to put an end to their two-match winless streak, which featured a loss against Al Masry and a dull draw against Zamalek.

The hosts created several chances in the first half, but contrived to waste every single one, as both teams went into the half-time break on level terms, although Jorvan Viera’s men were boosted by the expulsion of Ismaily’s Emad Hamdy in the 41st minute.

Midway through the second interval, Sayed Farid found the ball at his feet inside the area, following a fortunate bounce off a teammate. The defender steadied himself before rifling into the far corner to finally break the deadlock.

With less than five minutes to go, Smouha were awarded a controversial penalty for an alleged foul on Ahmed Mekki, and the forward dusted himself off to covert the spot-kick and double his side’s advantage.

Shoukry Naguib reminded the hosts that they weren’t completely out of danger, turning well before firing past a stationary Mohamed Abou-Gabal to make it 2-1.

A comeback wasn’t on the back for El Daraweesh, however, and the result sees the hosts rise to within one point of title rivals Al Ahly, while Ismaily remain on eight points in the bottom half of the standings.
