Omar Gaber starts in Basel’s home loss to Paris Saint-Germain

Basel entered the match needing a win after being thumped by Paris Saint-Germain away in Parc des Princes 3-0 and being on one point only after three matches.
Gaber’s first touch of the game wasn’t what he would have wanted as Bjarnason passed him the ball and he gave away a throw-in. Four minutes later the French champions started attacking, but Cavani was flagged offside after a poor showing from Basel’s defence.
Basel started to show some danger after Serey Die had his shot blocked by Marquinhos in the 15th minute, but it wasn’t clear of danger as a cross reached Basel skipper Delgado who tried his luck on goal with a half volley that was caught by Areola.
Cavani escaped the flag after another poor showing by Basel’s defence and he was through on goal, but his lofted shot went over the bar in the 19th minute. Cavani scored a goal in the 23rd minute, but Blaise Matuidi was flagged for offside.
Basel changed their defensive approach a bit and tried attacking with Delgado trying his luck, but was off target and managed to get a corner from it in the 30th minute.
Five minutes later Veratti won possession and burst into the box, then passing it to Di Maria who tries to cut in on his left but it was deflected by Traore.
In the 36th minute, Basel’s best player Delgado tries his luck but misses the target again after a great counter attack from the Swiss side.
Just before half time in the 43rd minute, Blaise Matuidi makes it 1-0 for PSG after a corner clearance by Basel went to Meunier who shot towards goal and Matuidi who was in between lots of bodies diverts it into the net.
The second half began with PSG attacking after Meunier had an attempt on target with the outside of his foot that was caught comfortably by Vaclik in the 52nd minute.
Omar Gaber saved his side from conceding again in the 58th minute after PSG’s counter attack where Lucas’s ball found Cavani that fired on goal only for Gaber to spread in front of the shot to block it.
In the 59th minute Delgado and Doumbia were substituted for Janko and Zuffi to come on in an effort by Basel to equalize the score.
Gaber came off in the 69th minute for Sporar after a decent display on his Champions League debut for Basel.
Zuffi equalized the score for Basel in the 76th minute after a goal from the right side when he send in a cross that was intended for Janko, but instead floats over Areola into the net.
Serey Die was sent off in the 84th minute after his second yellow for a late challenge on Marco Veratti.
Janko missed a great ball two minutes later after the ball fell to him in space with an open net, but fails to divert it properly into the net.
In the 90th minute, PSG sting Basel after scoring their winner with a fantastic goal by Meunier who unleashed a great volley into Vaclik’s net.
Paris qualify for the next round, while Basel will look to qualify for the UEFA Europa League with them being only on one point after four matches.
