VIDEO: Zamalek edge Al Masry at Borg El Arab
Ahmed Gaafar struck on the stroke of half-time to help Zamalek edge past Al Masry with a 1-0 win at Borg El Arab on Friday evening.
‘Hosts’ Zamalek knew a win was crucial to mounting a serious title challenge, especially given their postponed matches which came as a result of their ultimately unsuccessful 2016 CAF Champions League run.
Al Masry threatened to take the lead in the eighth minute, but goalkeeper Mahmoud Gennesh saved well to maintain his side’s clean sheet.
The Port Said outfit would have four more attempts before the end of the first period, but surprisingly found themselves trailing at the break; Ahmed Gaafar scored in injury time to give Zamalek the lead ahead of the second 45 minutes.
The goal would definitely alter both managers’ team talks during the break, and despite Al Masry’s genuine push for an equaliser in the second interval, the Whites successfully shut out their opponents to claim an important victory in the eighth round of 2016/17 Egyptian Premier League fixtures.
With this win, Zamalek climb into 10 place with 10 points, albeit having four matches in hand over the majority of teams.
Momen Soliman’s men will face off against lowly Tanta on November 18, after the conclusion of the international break.
