Egypt’s national team coach Hector Cuper said that his side deserved to win against Ghana, despite their underwhelming performance at Borg El-Arab Stadium on Sunday.

The Pharaohs secured a 2-0 victory over the Black Stars in Alexandria to move top of Group E of the World Cup qualifiers on six points, five ahead of third-placed Ghana.

Despite the Pharaohs’ perfect start to the qualifiers, Cuper believes it’s still too early to talk about Egypt securing qualification to the 2018 World Cup.

“There are still 12 points at stake, technically all teams can secure qualification to the World Cup. There are four remaining games and I can’t talk about securing qualification now,” Cuper said during the post-match press conference.

Several pundits have criticised Egypt’s performance against Ghana, but Cuper, who praised his players’ patience, said that the victory remains more important than the performance.

“We faced a strong team…I wished our performance was better. We made several mispasses but at the end we achieved what we wanted; the three points,” Cuper said.

The Argentine coach said that he relied on counter-attacks in the second half of the game, which proved effective and helped Egypt double their lead as Abdallah El-Said added Egypt’s second goal after finishing off a counter attack five minutes from time.

“We let the Ghanaian team control the possession and we won the game at the end. The goals game at great timing; it was perfect,” he added.
