Egypt’s midfielder Mohamed Elneny insisted that the final result is more important than the performance following his side’s victory over Ghana on Sunday.

The Pharaohs maintained their perfect start to the 2018 World Cup qualifiers with a 2-0 victory over the Black Stars to top Group E on six points, two ahead of second-placed Uganda.

“It’s not vital to put in a good performance, winning is more important,” Elneny said.

Ghana, who are third in the group with a solitary point, controlled the possession during the encounter but failed to score, while Egypt relied on counterattacks to earn the three points.

“Ghana are a strong team and have great players. We let their players control the possession but they still failed to pose any threat on our goal throughout the 90 minutes,” Elneny added.

The Arsenal midfielder stressed on the importance of Egypt’s home and away games against Uganda, saying that the current generation dreams of reaching the World Cup.

“I trust in the abilities of the current generation to achieve Egypt’s dream of reaching the World Cup,” Elneny said.

The qualification campaign is scheduled to resume next year as Egypt will travel to play against Uganda on August 27 in the third game of the qualifiers, before the Pharaohs host them a week later in Egypt.
