El-Shorbagy brothers and Abdel Gawad reach Qatar classic quarter-finals
Egypt’s Mohamed El-Shorbagy, Karim Abdel Gawad and Marwan El-Shorbagy reached the 2016 Qatar Classic quarter-finals.
World No.1 Mohamed El-shorbagy took 55 minutes to defeat Hong Kong’s Leo Au 3-1 ( 12-10, 11-13, 11-8, 11-8 ) to face Germany’s Simon Rösner, who knocked out England’s James Willstrop 3-0, in the Qatar classic quarter-finals.
“I thought I was up and down again like the first round and I lost focus at times,” said El-Shorbagy.
“Mentally, I felt a bit tired in the first round, but today I felt fresh. When you’re playing short, sharp rallies, you have to be mentally fresh to keep it up. If you’re not, you’re going to struggle big time in these kinds of conditions,” The Egyptian concluded.
World Champion Karim Abdel Gawad defeated fellow Egyptian Zahed Mohamed 3-2 ( 13-11, 9-11, 11-3, 9-11, 11-5 ) in 57 minutes and is set to face Marwan El-shorbagy, who beat Australia’s Ryan Cuskelly 3-0 ( 15-13, 13-11, 11-7 ) in 60 minutes.
“Since my first tournament here in Qatar, I played really well and I always play well here,” the World Champion said.
“I was looking forward to this tournament especially, I’ve done well the last few tournaments, and I believe I can also do well here. Tomorrow is a new day, I will just come on court and focus as if it is the first match and I will try to grab the win.”
Meanwhile, world number 6 Tarek Momen suffered a surprising defeat against France’s Grégoire Marche, who reached his first ever World Series quarter-final. The Egyptian lost 3-2 ( 4-11, 11-4, 11-8, 8-11, 11-9 ) in 76 minutes.
