Islam Gamal to leave Zamalek for El-Merreikh

Zamalek defender Islam Gamal has announced that he is looking to leave Zamalek for Sudanese side El-Merreikh.

This comes after the Gamal’s lack of game time with Zamalek, following the team’s 3-1 aggregate upset to Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League Final.

Sundowns’ final goal in The Brazilians 3-0 first leg victory in the African competition’s showdown came from a Gamal own-goal. The 27-year-old Egypt international defended his mistake, saying “any defender in the world may score an own goal, I didn’t want to score against my own team.”

Whilst the move has not been confirmed, Gamal’s destination looks to be El-Merreikh. Zamalek president Mortada Mansour announced that the transfer is set to take place in the upcoming January transfer window.

“The club’s president and I took the decision [to leave Zamalek], however I’m still waiting for my opportunity to feature in the remaining eight games with Zamalek before January.”

Gamal claimed that he would have liked to remain with Zamalek, stressing that he hopes to be involved in the Whites’ matches before his foreseeable move.
