World No.3 Karim Abdel Gawad has managed to overcome fellow Egyptian and World No.1 Mohamed ElShorbagy and win the Qatar Classic final, his first World Series title.

ElShorbagy held a 4-1 advantage in head-to-head games against Abdel Gawad before the Qatar Classic final with the latter prevailing in their most recent meeting in the PSA Men’s World Championship semi-final.

Abdel Gawad cruised past ElShorbagy, who won the tournament’s last two editions, to clinch his first World Series title with a 3-0 win (12-10, 15-13 and 11-7).

Abdel Gawad is enjoying an impressive season as the victory comes almost two weeks after he claimed his first ever World Championship title.

“Being world champion and Qatar champion sounds good, really good. I am living the dream,” Abdel Gawad said, according to the PSA website.

“I’m very happy with the way I performed today. For the first time, I was under pressure. When you are a world champion, people expect you to win and that you have a big chance to win. That is a new element I had to integrate into my preparation,” he added.

The 25-year-old currently leads the current World Series ranking with 205 points with ElShorbagy being second on 180 points.

ElShorbagy praised his opponent after the match and expressed his gratitude to his team for their constant support.

“Karim deserves to be the champion, he’s played so well in this first part of the season. It was a great match, and the best player on the day won,” ElShorbagy said.
