Mahmoud Abdel-Razek Shikabala scored a penalty to give Zamalek all three points against Tanta in gameweek 9 of the Egyptian Premier League on Friday.

Shikabala almost opened the scoring for his side after 15 minutes from a free kick on the edge of the box, but Tanta keeper Islam Tarek produced a fine save to keep the score goalless.

Tanta had a chance to take the lead at the half-hour mark but the striker failed to finish off a counter attack as the ball went over the bar.

Four minutes later, Zamalek were awarded a penalty kick after Ayman Hefny was fouled by Reda El-Azab inside the box and Shikabala scored from the spot to give Zamalek the lead.

The newly promoted side nearly levelled the score before the break, but the White Castle’s keeper Ahmed El-Shennawy deflected Tanta striker’s header with his fingertips as the first half ended with the White Knights holding a 1-0 lead.

Tanta tried to control possession during the early stages of the second half and pushed unsuccessfully for an equaliser. The guests’ hopes of a comeback were dealt a blow after Mohamed Gouda was sent off in the 58th minute after picking up a second booking for simulation.

Despite continuing the game with 10 men, Tanta managed to withstand the pressure and prevent Zamalek, who failed to exploit their numerical advantage, from adding more goals.

Zamalek, who still have four games in hand, move to sixth place with 13 points, while Tanta sit at the bottom of the league standings on four points from nine games.
