Egypt beat Zimbabwe to keep AWCON hopes alive
Egypt kept their hopes of qualifying for the 2016 AWCON semi-finals alive with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Zimbabwe.
The Pharaohs lost their group A opener 2-0 against hosts Cameroon, and a loss against Zimbabwe would have eliminated them from the tournament.
The only goal of the game came in the 82nd minute through 27-year-old Salma Ahmed to put Egypt 1-0 up, before Zimbabwe scored the equaliser in the dying moments of the game, but the referee disallowed the goal for offside.
The result means Cameroon will finish top of Group A, after defeating South Africa 1-0, while Egypt are in second place above Zimbabwe and South Africa, who are tied at one point apiece.
Egypt face third-placed South Africa in their last match of the group-stages on Friday, with only a draw would be enough for them to advance to the semi-finals.
Group A table:
1. Cameroon: 6 points.
2. Egypt: 3 points.
3. South Africa: 1 point.
4. Zimbabwe: 1 point.
