Trezeguet’s Mouscron eliminated by KV Kortrijk in Belgian Cup
Royal Excel Mouscron traveled to Guldensporen Stadium to play KV Kortrijk in the quarterfinals of the 2016-17 Belgium Cup second leg.
Ahead of the return leg, Mouscron were winless in their last seven games in both the league and cup competitions.
In the first leg of the cup tie, Mouscron lost 1-0 to Kortrijk at home. Mouscron went on to lose to Kortrijk by the same scoreline in the Belgian Pro League.
Egypt international Mahmoud Hassan ‘Trezeguet’ played the entire match, continuing to enjoy play time, as his team looked to overturn the score from the first leg.
The encounter produced nonentity in the opening half in terms of goals. Fans had to put up with this situation until the 79th minute as Kortrijk’s Andriy Totovitskiy struck the only goal of the match, putting Mouscron in a tough position.
Totovitskiy’s goal meant that Mouscron needed two goals to turn the tables with only ten minutes to play. That was proven to be farfetched as Mouscron fell to Kortrijk 2-0 on aggregate.
Kortrijk’s win denied Mouscron a spot in the semi-finals of the Belgian Cup as they marched on to the next round. Next up, Mouscron will play Sint-Truiden on Saturday, away from home, in the Belgian Pro League.
