Saad Samir capitalized on a bizarre error from goalkeeper Mohamed Abou-Gabal as Al Ahly clinched a hard-fought win against Smouha, on Thursday evening.

The reigning league champions defeated high-flying Misr El-Maqassa 1-0 on Sunday to open up a seven-point lead at the top of the table, and were looking to maintain their winning run against Smouha.

Ahmed Hegazy had the opportunity to put Al Ahly in the lead midway through the first half, but the defender headed over the bar after getting on the end of a cross from Ali Maaloul.

Minutes later, Smouha striker Banou Diawara wasted two golden chances to break the deadlock; the Burkinabé hit the post with his first chance, before failing to capitalize on a defensive error from Mohamed Hany immediately afterwards.

Smouha custodian Mohamed Abou-Gabal made a mess of a routine save from Ahmed Hegazy on the stroke of half-time, and the Alexandria-based club were lucky to go into the break on level terms.

Despite saving a one-on-one from ex-Ismaily striker Marwan Mohsen in the 70th minute, the goalkeeper ultimately cost his side in added time, as a cross from Abdallah El-Said bizarrely hit the former’s face and fell to Saad Samir, who smashed the ball home for the winner.

Al Ahly are now 12 points clear of third-placed Smouha after 14 rounds in the 2016/17 Egyptian Premier League season, and the Red Devils’ next fixture is on Monday, against ENPPI.
