Basketball: Al Ahly advance to African Championship final
Al Ahly defeated Nigerian champions Kano Pillars 71-65 on Thursday evening to earn a spot in the 2016 FIBA Africa Clubs Champions Cup final.
The Egyptians qualified to the semi-finals after beating Cameroonian side Piak 63-60 in the quarter-finals to face Kano Pillars, who defeated Algeria’s GS Pétroliers 91-81.
The Red Devils narrowly edged Kano Pillars in the first-quarter of the game 15-13, but the Nigerian side were quickly back in the game as both sides were tied 34-34 at half-time.
Al Ahly restored their lead in the third-quarter which ended 54-51, and continued their dominance to pull off a convincing 71-65 win at the end.
The Red Devils set to face Angolan giants Recreativo do Libolo in the final on Friday December 16.
It’s worth mentioning that the Angolan side have won the trophy once in 2014 and were runners-up last year, while Al Ahly have never won it before, as there are only three Egyptian sides that have been crowned champions of Africa, Al Gezira in 1994 and 1996, Zamalek in 1992, and Ittihad of Alexandria in 1987.
