Former Al Ahly manager José Peseiro has been relieved of his coaching duties at Sporting Braga, with immediate effect.

Peseiro, who coached Egypt international Ahmed Koka at Braga, was sacked after a 2-1 loss to Covilhã in the cup, just a few days after a disappointing group-stage exit in the 2016-17 EUFA Europa League.

Club president Antonio Salvador revealed that Peseiro will not be a part of the technical staff any longer, after having failed to meet two of their goals for the season. He also announced the appointment of Abel Ferreira as the new head coach of the club.

This was the 56-year-old’s second stint at Braga- the first came in 2012. Peseiro was in charge at Al Ahly during the 2015/16 season, but had his contract with the Red Devils terminted by mutual consent.

Braga currently sit in fourth place in the Primeira Liga table, one point behind Sporting CP, who they visit on Sunday night in the battle to secure UEFA Champions League qualification.
