Egypt’s Mohamed Abdel-Shafy played the full 90 minutes as defending champions Al Ahli claimed a tough 3-2 win over Al Taawon in gameweek 13 of the Saudi Professional League.

Al Ahli striker Omar Al Somah opened the scoring with a penalty in the ninth minute before Ricardo Machado levelled the score at 1-1 on the quarter-hour mark.

The guests regained the lead midway through the second half as Abdulfattah Asiri scored in the 67th minute. Al Taawon needed just three minutes to make it 2-2 as Mounir El Hamdaoui scored an equaliser from the penalty spot.

Four minutes later, Al Taawon were awarded a second penalty but El Hamdaoui wasted a chance to give his side the lead after his shot was saved by Al Ahli keeper.

Saeed Al-Dosari scored an own goal with nine minutes remaining to gift Al Ahli all three points.

Al Ahli sit third in the league table on 28 points, three away from leaders Ittihad. They will face six-placed Al-Ettifaq on Dec. 22.
