VIDEO: Kahraba stars as Ittihad lose to Atlético in 90th anniversary fixture
Mahmoud Abdel-Moniem ‘Kahraba’ scored once and assisted his side’s other goal as Al Ittihad lost 2-3 to Atlético Madrid in the former club’s 90th anniversary celebrations.
Defender Juanfran opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, after getting on the end of a long ball inside the opposition area.
Egypt international Kahraba leveled the scores in the 43rd minute, as he stretched himself to tap in from an Ahmed Akaïchi low cross into the area.
Two minutes later – and with the half-time whistle seconds away, Kahraba showed some great footwork on the right flank before finding the unmarked Akaïchi at the far post with a deft pass between Saúl Ñíguez’s legs, and the Tunisian duly placed in the ball into an empty net to give his side the lead.
The 2013/14 La Liga champions pulled themselves level in the 62nd minute with a Fernando Torres penalty, before Jose Gimenez headed home from an Ángel Correa set-piece.
Atlético then held on for the remaining 20 minutes to somewhat dampen the Jeddah club’s celebrations, but Egypt manager Héctor Cúper will no doubt have been pleased by Kahraba’s excellent performance against a top European team, ahead of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.
