REVEALED: Egypt coach & captain’s votes for FIFA Player of the Year
Egypt national team manager Héctor Cúper and Essam El-Hadary’s 2016 Best FIFA Men’s Award have been revealed, with both picking Argentine forward Lionel Messi to win the annual award.
French magazine France Football‘s Ballon d’Or and FIFA’s Best FIFA Football Awards were separated this year after six years of partnership. Between 2010 and 2016, the award was known as the FIFA Ballon d’Or and it was awarded to the best player of the year as voted by journalists, national team captains, and managers.
The 2016 Ballon d’Or was given to Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo in December of last year, with the winger also collecting the Best FIFA Men’s Award on Monday.
Egypt’s captain Essam El-Hadary and manager Héctor Cúper both placed Lionel Messi in first place, followed by the actual award winner Cristiano Ronaldo in second place.
El-Hadary and Cúper both picked Spain international Andrés Iniesta for third place. First place picks received five points, second place picks received three points, and third place received one.
After counting all the votes, Cristiano Ronaldo was voted in first place with about 34% of the votes, followed by Lionel Messi in second place, and Frenchman Antoine Griezmann in third place. Algeria and Leicester City forward Riyad Mahrez came in seventh place.
