OFFICIAL: Injured Egypt keeper El-Shennawy to miss rest of AFCON
National team goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shennawy will not be able to play in the 2017 African Cup of Nations after picking up an injury in Egypt’s first group match against Mali.
El-Shennawy was substituted in Egypt’s match against Mali on the 24th minute as the team dropped two points failing to win their first AFCON opener since 2010.
X-ray scans revealed the presence of an injury to El-Shennawy’s hamstring which will definitely keep him out of action for two weeks.
“Medical scans confirmed that El-Shennawy will not be available to play for us again as he will need to rest for two weeks,” national team manager Ihab Lehita confirmed to the press.
“In a few a hours more medical tests will be made on the player to know exactly how long he will be away for.”
Medical tests later confirmed the player will not be able to start training again for at least 14 days.
El-Shennawy’s injury means that he will also be missing the Egypt Super Cup match against Al Ahly which will be played in the UAE. Zamalek requested the return of the 25-year-old goalkeeper to Cairo to receive the needed treatment.
In addition to El-Shennawy, Sherif Ekramy is injured as well which leaves El-Hadary as the only fit goalkeeper for Egypt.
